President's Message

February 2010

Dear Friends,

February can be a long, bleak and dreary month – especially in Cleveland. Perhaps Valentine’s Day occurs in February for a very good reason. It encourages us to add some warmth to our inner spirits by opening our hearts and rekindling family ties and friendships. It is also appropriate that February is "American Heart Month.” Although many people think of heart disease as a man's problem, women can and do get heart disease. In fact, heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States. EWC is helping to spread awareness by presenting “Take it to Heart” at our luncheon on February 11th. Please join the cause and Wear Red that day. In order to encourage all to attend, babes-in-arms are welcome and childcare for older children will be offered free of charge.

Our 60th Anniversary year is boasting the highest membership it has seen in years, including 28 new members who joined this past year. All are encouraged to get even more involved as we begin the nominating process for next year’s Board. A description of the Board positions is listed on page 5. During my 4 years tenure on the Board, I have enjoyed the camaraderie and dedication of the many talented women who help make our club so successful. If you would like to get involved or have a friend you think would be an ideal addition to the Board, please let me know. You will find that a small commitment of your time can be so rewarding. Many of you may be putting your careers on hold as you stay at home to raise your children. In the absence of employment, involvement in community service is an important addition to your resume. I can speak from personal experience as I recently interviewed for a job and upon review of my resume, my interviewer asked about my involvement in the Eastside Welcome Club.

A sincere thank you goes out to all who purchased raffle tickets at our January luncheon. Through your generosity we were able to send $335 to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund.

Membership is $25.00 per year (prorated $12.50 for new members joining after January 1, 2010) and includes a subscription to the monthly newsletter and a membership directory. Our membership year is from June 1 through May 31.
